David Burch

Life Member - David Burch 001

Dave was a third generation Wonga player, his grandfather was a founding member of the Club. He began playing as a 15 year old in 1947. Dave was a member of the 1956/57 premiership team and won the First 11 bowling average in 1967/68. He then retired from playing in 1970.

Off the field Dave was a Committee Member for 20 years, and was Chairman of Selectors in 1979/80 and 1980/81. Due to his magnificent contribution to the Club Dave was awarded Life Membership in 1978. Since retiring Dave would always try to watch our games when he could, and attend Club functions.

Dave was a real character and in our centenary year he recalled a story: “Ernie (Kear) was captain when Skinny (Dave’s identical twin brother Keith) and I got 136 in a last wicket partnership to win against North Croydon. During our innings we overheard someone say that we only needed 6 runs to win, so we made another 60 just to make sure!”

Dave Burch, a great Wonga Park Cricket Club clubman and his contribution will always be remembered.

David passed away  September 6th 2013

Our sincere sympathies to Dave’s wife Shirley, and sisters Marg Knee, and Thelma Leech.
